Winter Exercise for Your Dog

When the weather gets cold, you may feel the urge to skimp on your dog’s walks for some extra time by the fire. However, just because the weather is cold does not mean your dog would not benefit from his or her regular activity. Whether you take your dog out to run after a ball, or you grab the leash and hit the trail, be sure to maintain a steady exercise routine for your dog this season.

Many of the human based exercise guidelines also apply to canines. For example, daily exercise is beneficial for the physical body as well as the mental state. Also, be sure to gradually work into any kind of exercise program. Just because your dog may exhibit excessive energy does not mean they are exempt from exercise related injuries. Avoid taking your friend outdoors for a sudden sprint, if they have not been walking or jogging regularly.

The American Animal Hospital Association’s Pet Library includes helpful tips for exercising your dog. They advise dog owners to observe their dog’s condition throughout activity. If your dog appears to be struggling with an activity, be sure to stop immediately. A dog cannot verbally tell you he is hurt or uncomfortable, so it is important to take it upon yourself to look for signs of discomfort, and react accordingly.

They remind runners and joggers that though sidewalks may be convenient for outdoor activities, they are not the most comfortable for your dog’s paws. Try to find a grassy area or dirt trail for your trip. Also be sure to avoid any broken glass, litter, ice and other hazards.

The American Animal Hospital Association also advises owners to take it a bit easier on extremely cold days. If the weather is particularly bitter, and weather advisories are telling you to stay indoors, you should probably listen. Pick up a game of tug-of-war in the living room, instead of braving the cold on the most frigid of days.

Finally, make sure you provide your dog with fresh water and a pat on the back after any exercise activity. After spending time exercising together you can both stretch out and relax from the comfort of your home.
