Understand the importance of consistency in dog training

Consistency is the one training tool that you cannot do without. There are a variety of different dogs in the world, with a plethora of training needs. And while there are a variety of training methods, different classes and training props and tools, a sense of consistency is the one tool that will make a significant difference in your dog’s life.  

Dogs are naturally pack animals and instinctively follow a leader known as the alpha dog. In theory, this puts you one step ahead of the game when training your new puppy. He is already on the lookout for a leader and role model. Fill the shoes of alpha dog and your puppy will gladly follow your lead. However, do not act like the alpha dog one day and the runt of a litter the next. Your dog will recognize the change and begin to fight for the role of alpha dog. However if you consistently and confidently lead your dog, he will have no reason to question your authority.

When teaching commands, be sure to offer consistent praise each time your dog obeys you. If rewards are inconsistent, your dog will not know that he is supposed to obey your command. Additionally, he will lack motivation to comply you. However by offering a consistent reward, even if it is simply a verbal “Good boy”, your dog will understand what he is supposed to do and he will be willing to do it. Consistency is key to teaching any command.

Likewise, be consistent in your expectations of your dog. Do not change your expectations in different environments or in the presence of certain people. You will only confuse your dog if you try to reprimand him for things that he is usually permitted to do. Your dog will become confused in all areas of his life and may become troublesome. Remember to remain consistent in what you allow him to do and what he is not allowed to do.

Remember that your dog looks to you for guidance and direction. If you constantly provide your dog with mixed signals, he will understandably become confused. He will not know what is expected of him, or what is the appropriate behavior. Remain consistent in your training to bring out the best behavior in your dog.
