Tips to Simplify Your Dog Grooming
Though you groom your dog to keep him clean, sometimes just the act of grooming can be a messy endeavor. When done wrong, grooming can cause harm to your dog’s skin, and even make more of a mess of his coat. Additionally, grooming can get you dirty, as well as your house. If you have ever noticed that grooming your dog leads to headaches, take note of these grooming tips.
When grooming your dog, be sure to use a brush that is appropriate for your dog’s coat. For example, a longer haired dog will need a longer toothed comb-like brush. Conversely, a short haired dog will need more of a nubby mitt, that stimulates and massages instead of de-tangling. An all-natural de-tangler might also help you work through your long haired dog. When grooming any dog, remember to work on just a section at a time for the most efficient and effective grooming session. Additionally, be careful not to brush so hard that you are aggressively brushing the skin. Some of the sharper brushes and combs may actually cut or scrape the skin.
As for yourself, wear clothes that you do not mind getting dirty. It is even best if you can change clothes immediately after grooming to prevent yourself from spreading dog hair throughout your travels. You might also want to lay a sheet or towel under your dog for the grooming session. Even better, try to pick a nice day when you can do the brushing outdoors to prevent the hair from filling your house.
When you finish grooming, be sure to give your dog a great deal of praise for his cooperation throughout the endeavor. Take a few minutes to clean up the grooming area, to contain the mess. Wash your brushes and combs to prevent the spread of any dirt and debris. And remember, if you really struggle with grooming your dog, you can always seek the help of a professional groomer or your veterinarian.
