Search and rescue dogs save the lives of humans
Sometimes dogs provide more than just companionship to humans. Many dogs serve as search and rescue dogs, helping to uncover those lost in a disaster. These dogs are able to locate humans more efficiently and effectively than other humans are able to. Search and rescue dogs are able and willing heroes.
Dogs have been used as search and rescue dogs throughout history. While in the beginning, they merely accompanied humans on search missions, it was quickly discovered that many of the dogs were perfectly capable of seeking out the lost parties all on their own. With their acute sense of smell, the dogs are extremely good at tracking lost humans. And with their agility and determination, it was discovered that they could traverse challenging terrains much easier than people.
Today, dogs are trained specifically for search and rescue missions. While the dogs for this position must have the sharp sense of smell as well as the athleticism of its ancestors, search and rescue trainers also look for intelligence and a willingness to learn and please. The German Shepard is one of the most commonly used search and rescue dogs today. However the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever and Collie are also popular choices. In Europe, the St. Bernard is extremely adept at finding people in avalanches and deep snow, while the Newfoundland is known for its natural ability to perform water rescue. Nevertheless, any strong and willing dog can serve as a search and rescue dog.
There are currently many training programs for potential search and rescue dogs. After completing their training, a dog becomes certified as a search and rescue dog. Dogs can be trained to find and rescue humans in the wilderness, water and disaster areas. They can also be trained to find human remains as well, not just live humans.
It takes a special dog to become a search and rescue dog. The dogs are willing and brave, extremely intelligent and instinctual. Without the help of these amazing canines, many people would go undiscovered and unsaved.
