Prepare Your Home for a Puppy
Welcoming a puppy into your home is incredibly exciting and rewarding. With the proper training and care, your puppy will be an important member of your family in ways you may have never thought possible. Before you officially let a puppy into your life, be certain that you and your household are prepared to give it a suitable home.
Before acquiring any animal, be sure to find a trustworthy and reliable veterinarian. It is important that you connect with your chosen veterinarian, as you will be relying on him or her to guide you through your dog’s life. It is often best to talk to other dog-owners in your area to find a highly recommended veterinarian. Have an appointment schedule for your puppy before you even bring him home. Your veterinarian will need to check your dog’s overall health, as well as his eyes, lungs, ears, heart and skin. Additionally, have your veterinarian check your puppy’s stools and blood for parasites. After a prompt and thorough veterinarian visit, you can work to maintain your dog’s health.
Take time to prepare your home for a new puppy. Keep your home neat and tidy to prevent your puppy’s temptation to eat or chew items. Secure all cabinets, doors and drawers to keep your puppy as well as your items safe. Stock up on non-toxic cleaning products because despite your efforts, your puppy will most likely have the occasional accident or make messes in the beginning.
If you are going to crate-train your dog, purchase a crate well in advance. The earlier you can acquaint your puppy with the crate, the easier it will be to train him. Provide bedding for the crate in the form of a pad or piece of carpet. Your puppy will also appreciate a blanket to snuggle with at night.
Have a collar, leash and tag ready for your new puppy. If possible, find options that are adjustable so they can grow with your puppy. Your puppy will also need a food and water dish. Find durable dishes, because he will probably try to play with them in the beginning. Lastly, be sure to have chew toys for your puppy. Encourage him to play with his own toys instead of other items in your home.
Most importantly, be prepared to give your new puppy lots of love and support. He will be more than happy to become a valuable companion to you and your family.
