Owning a Dog in the City

Many people think that they should have a large yard and large house before they get a dog. However there are a number of dogs that are perfectly content to live in an urban environment with a loving owner. As long as you attend to the special needs of a dog in a city, you can live happily with your canine companion in the city.

If you are a renter, as many city dwellers are, be sure to check with your landlord before bringing a dog into your apartment. If you have signed a lease that clearly states “no pets,” your landlord can force you to get rid of your dog or else leave your apartment. Getting rid of a new dog can be traumatic for both you and your dog. Make sure you are allowed to have a dog before you go out to get one.

Many people who live in the city rely on public transportation to get around town. If you are one of these people, be sure to figure out how you are going to transport your dog to the veterinarian’s office. Most city buses and trains as well as taxi cabs do not allow animals. Find out if the transportation in your town does allow animals, or make other arrangements before getting your dog. In case of an emergency, you should always have a plan for getting him to the animal hospital quickly and quietly.

Find out where the dog parks are in your area. Your dog is going to need exercise and socialization, and in a city, a dog park is often the best way to meet those needs. Also be prepared to carry extra plastic bags around with you. In a city, more so than most other places, it is important that you pick up after your dog. With so many people, it is downright inconsiderate to leave your dog’s business on the sidewalk or street.

Lastly, while many people do have larger dogs in the city, a small dog works best. Find a dog that will not feel restless or large in your apartment. Lap dogs and terriers typically make fine apartment pets. Make the most of living in the city by having a dog who enjoys other people. A nervous or skittish dog will just feel even worse amidst the bustle of the city. However find the dog that works best in your home, in your lifestyle and in your heart for the best canine experience.
