Outdoor Activities for Your Dog

Spring and summer bring warmer weather and ample opportunity for outdoor playtime with your dog. Keep your outdoor activities fun and exciting by varying your activities. Here are some great suggestions for exercising and playing with your dog in the great outdoors.

Engage in a game of tug-of-war. Be sure to choose a sturdy toy for this endeavor. Many companies make toys specifically for this game. It is also important to find the appropriate size for your dog. A tug-of-war toy suitable for a large dog may be larger than the entire body of a smaller dog! Also take your dog’s strength and size into account as you play the game. Let your dog dictate the level of intensity for the game. Do not be overly aggressive with your dog. Most dogs thoroughly enjoy a great game of tug-of-war.

Take your dog for a long walk. Walks are usually better for your dog than a run. Running with your dog may compromise his joints, so when possible, opt for a brisk walk instead. Just be sure to take safety precautions, especially when walking near the road. When walking also keep in mind that you not only go in one direction, but you must also walk the distance back around to your starting point. Plan your routes accordingly.

Sometimes nothing beats a great game of fetch. Instead of throwing frisbees and sticks high into the air, choose a tennis ball for the games. Toss the ball so it stays close to the ground, or even roll it along the ground, relieving pressure on your dog’s joints. As with all games and exercise, be sure to not strain your dog. Ease slowly into the game, and quit if you notice your dog becoming tired.

Always reward your dog for his good behavior during your outdoor activities. And be sure to provide plenty of fresh water throughout every day, but especially after exercise.
