Dog Ear Otitis Symptoms and Treatments
Otitis in dogs is an inflammation of the inside layer skin of the ear. A very common inflammation problem seen in any dog breeds, Otitis is not a serious illness, but if not properly treated can become serious and cause further new problems to your dog’s ear.
Symptoms
Otitis inflammation of the ear usually involves a smell and sometimes discharge from the ear.
Because of the irritation, your dog may scratch its ears and shake its head regularly. The inside ear flap or ear hole may also be reddish in color. Because of the discomfort cause by the inflammation, some dogs may nib or snap at anyone who touches him around the ear.
Treatment
You should not try to treat your dog otitis problem yourself. You should take him to the vet for examination as soon as possible. Never attempt to apply any medication, remove any suspected foreign objects yourself. You may cause permanent ear damage to your dog ears and cause him to be deaf.
Try not to remove any discharge from the ear as it may help your vet diagnose the ear condition of your dog and help to pinpoint the problem faster.
A typical otitis treatment would be to have dog’s ear clean and wash (syringe), or to apply medication to the dog ears. If your dog has hairy inner ears, you are recommended to pluck them on a regular basis. Only in serious cases would a surgery be required.
