Help your dog stay happy and healthy as he ages

Dogs, like all living things, eventually grow old. It can be difficult to see your once energetic puppy losing his spunk and spirit. However it is important to remember that your dog is merely moving into another stage of his life. Help him through his changes and ensure his comfort into old age.

One of the first signs of aging for most dogs is the graying of their hair. The grays may be subtle at first, just a stray hair here and there. However some dogs become quite gray on their head. The face and muzzle may hardly resemble your dog’s youthful coloring. This change is completely normal, and nothing to cause any worry.

You may also notice that your dog has difficulty hearing or seeing. Perhaps he is easily startled or unresponsive to your commands. It is important to remain patient and understanding with your dog as he ages. Try to use hand commands instead of vocal commands when possible. Take care to gently get your dog’s attention instead of startling him. Use extra caution when he is outdoors, particularly near the road. He may not be able to hear cars as well as he could in the past which increases his risk of getting hurt. Your dogs eyes may take a bluish tint, which is often a normal part of aging. However if you notice white in the eyes, your dog may have cataracts which require veterinary attention.

Your dog may also begin to move at a slower pace. His joints may be stiff and he may lose some of his muscle. Again, stay patient with your dog and slow your own pace when you are walking him. It is best to give your dog time outside, but be sure to supervise his activities. Take him for leisurely strolls instead of jogs. Pay attention to his needs and be careful not to overwork your dog. Keep him out of harm’s way as he requires more time to react as an older dog than as a puppy.

Remember that as your dog gets older, he needs your love and support more than ever. Be sure to keep him happy, healthy and comfortable as he retires into old age.
