Help your Dog Adjust to a New Environment
Whether you are moving homes, going on a weekend get-away, or an extended vacation, changing locations can be stressful for your dog. However, it is possible to decrease the amount of disruption your dog experiences through each move.
The best way to ease your dog’s mind is to maintain a routine. Try to keep feeding times as close to normal as possible, both to keep your dog happy, and to maintain his digestive health. Additionally, try as best you can to go to bed at roughly the same time each day. If you regularly exercise your dog, aim for your usual exercise times to keep your dog less stressed, and healthier.
Whenever you are in a new area, keep your dog on a leash to ensure his safety. Sometimes even the best behaved dogs act impulsively in a new environment. Do your best to supervise your dog until he acquaints himself to his new surroundings. It is often a great idea to walk your dog around the property, to introduce him to the boundaries as well as the new sights and scents. He will be less nervous and more confidant with a formal introduction from his owner. The same goes for neighbors, and neighboring pets. Check with your neighbors to see if they would mind meeting your dog. Taking the time to formally introduce them will let your dog rest at ease, instead of remaining defensive and on edge around all of the people.
Lastly, make sure your dog has his regular bed, food dishes, food, and a few toys. Some dogs become very attached to their possessions. These items can do a great deal of service in ensuring your dog’s comfort in an unfamiliar environment. Though it may seem like a hassle to pack these items along for a vacation, your dog’s peace of mind will make the trip more pleasant for your entire family, so the effort is well worth the results.
Remember that experience is key to an adaptable dog. Begin short trips early in his life to ensure his comfort on longer trips throughout his adult life.
