Finding a Stray Dog

Coming across stray dogs can be a difficult situation. On one hand, any dog lover wants to find the dog’s owners, and return the pooch to his home safe and sound. But on the other hand, animals can be dangerous, and it is important to keep yourself out of danger. However, with common sense it is possible to rescue a stray dog and successfully find his home, or perhaps even welcome him into your own home.

Always listen to your gut when you come across a stray dog. If the dog looks menacing, or unwell, you should avoid going near it. It might have rabies, or aggressive tendencies. If you suspect that this is the case, call the local animal control authorities immediately. However, if you feel that you are safe to go near the dog, do your best to rescue it.

Try to call the dog over to you. When he gets close enough, look at his collar for dog tags. If the dog is wearing tags, call the phone number on the tag as soon as possible to alert the owners that you have found their dog. However, the dog might not be registered, or may have slipped out of his collar. If this is the case, you can try to take the dog to your local animal shelter, or even your own home.

If you take the dog to your home, be sure to call the animal shelter, as well as your veterinarian. It is important to let them know that you have found a stray dog, so that they can pass the information onto any dog owners who call them searching for their lost dog.
