Basic Dog Obedience Commands

There are four basic dog obedience commands that every dog should know as they are the foundation to a well-behave dog. It is highly recommended that all dogs should go through these four basic dog obedience command training so as to know their position in the family, be obedient, housetrained and problem free in the house. The four commands are listed below namely:

Sit – Your dog’s hip should be on the ground while his shoulder stays upright.

Down – Your dog should lied down on the ground and keep still.

Stay – Your dog should remain in the position of sit or down when you walk away from him. He must be able to stay in position until you give him permission to move.

Heel – Your dog should walk on your side with his shoulder in line with your leg.

Most dogs are willing to learn these basic dog obedience commands because dogs like to please people especially their owners.

By learning these commands, your dog can learn to control himself and behave in a appropriate manner in public, such as to sit when greeting people and not jumping on everyone he sees (not everyone would appreciate a jumping dog), to walk nicely on a leash so that you can take him out for a walk, not your dog taking you out for a walk.  :-)

During Basic Obedience Command Training
It’s best to find a training ground where your dog can concentrate on training and not distracted by activities around him. You should start your training slowly especially with young puppies. Never train a pup for more than 5 minutes.

Training session for older dogs should also not last for more than 15 minutes. They will not have the mental stamina to concentrate on training. It’s always good to take breaks in between training session.

The whole family should have a fix set of house rules and commands for the dog and it’s extremely important that everybody stick to it. For example, is the dog allowed on the couch, bed, etc… House rules and commands should be consistently applied within the whole family. No “ifs” No “buts”.

When to train
Ideally, you should start to train and correct unwanted behaviors as early as possible when your dog is 8-10 weeks old.

It’s always easier to train a young puppy than older dogs. Nevertheless, it’s still possible to train older dogs, you just have to break his bad habits first and teach him the correct ones.

To end, all dogs are trainable regardless of breeds and age, it just require patience and perseverance and self discipline from you and your family. Train your dog the five basic dog obedience commands today and it will definitely help him be a better behaved dog.
