Dog Digging Problem - How To Stop Dog Digging Behavior

In the wild, wolves dig to make dens to provide shelter and to protect their pups from danger. Today, dogs dig to bury bones, make dens, relieve stress or just simply for the fun of it. Digging is essentially a common dog behavior, and is part of its natural instinct.

However fun digging can be for your dogs, we human as far as possible dislike a dog who loves to dig. Dog digging behaviors not only mess up the yard, we have to waste time and effort to clear up the mess!

There are two ways to stop dog digging behavior, one is to constantly correct that unwanted digging behavior whenever you see him in the act. Correct his behavior in a firm tone, using command like “nope”. You have to correct and stop your dog digging behavior constantly to be effective.

Because it’s much difficult to stop dog from digging since it is part of their natural instinct, it’s a good idea to give him a personal space for him to dig. Rather than your dog digging over all over your yard, you can assign his personal digging space:

1. Find a spot in which you feel comfortable for your dog to dig in.

2. Dig it up a bit so that the soil is soft and loosen, bury your dog’s favorite toys or treats.

3. Encourage and invite your dog to dig at that spot. Bring him to that spot whenever you spot him digging elsewhere. (It might be difficult to catch him in the act as most dogs seem to dig in when they are alone.)

4. Praise when he digs at that spot.

Another alternative top stop your dog digging behavior would be to either let your dog out only when you can supervise him or fence up the area where you don’t want him to dig. Simple!
