Dog Destructive Chewing Problem: How To Stop Dog Chewing Behavior


Dog destructive chewing problem often starts while the puppy is teething, and when his jaws feel uncomfortable from teething, chewing helps your puppy to relieve part of his discomfort.

Chewing behavior problems during your puppy’s teething period is a common signs of a teething dog behavior and should not be a big problem. You have got to correct and stop his chewing behavior on the spot and give him an alternative like a chew toy. Communicate to him that chewing is only allow on the chew toys and nothing else by correcting and stopping his unwanted chewing behavior constantly.

Destructive chewing problem will only be a major headache when your dog learns that chewing is fun and starts chewing things and causing damages around the house whenever he’s bore.

Destructive chewing is an undesirable behavior that must be stop and put under control. Here are some tips to help you combat your dog’s destructive behavior:

1. Apply taste deterrents like bitter apple spray to objects that you do want your dog to chew on. Dogs have a sensitive nose and would not chew on any of these objects.

2. Offer chew toys for your dog to chew on. Get a proper safe chew toy for your dog from dog toy manufacturers. You should not offer human children toys to your dogs. Most importantly, your chew toys should not be stuffs that you do not want your dog to chew on – old clothing, socks, shoes and so on. It will give him the wrong impression that such items can be chewed.

3. Dogs usually chew out of boredom. Try to offer more exercises and play time. You can also get a companion for your dog should you are not at home for most of the time.

Some degree of damages is really inevitable especially when you start out with a puppy. Prevention is better than cure. Start to correct your puppy undesirable behavior when he’s young.

Reminder: Do not punish your dog if you found out that he has chewed your things when you leave the house. After-the-act punishment does not work at all!
