Dog Shelters

If you are interested in adopting a new dog or are looking to get rid of your current dog, you may be thinking about animal shelters. An animal shelter is a place that houses and cares for homeless dogs until they are adopted. It is important to remember that not all animal shelters are the same. Their policies vary, as well as their overall structure and organization. Their source of funding may be from private donations or it may be state funded. Look into specific shelters before adopting from one or taking your current dog to a shelter.

Some shelters are no-kill institutions. These shelters will keep their animals, send them to foster homes or to other no-kill shelters before euthanizing a healthy animal. For the safety of their shelter and other animals, they do put down terminally ill animals. Most of the no-kill shelters are funded through donations and fundraisers and are often in need of supplies and volunteers. Though these shelters often have great intentions, they can become over-crowded and develop problems with cleanliness and illness.

Other shelters are known for euthanizing the animals who have not been adopted. Instead of moving their animals to foster homes or other shelters, they put them down in order to make room for new animals. While the policy seems inhumane, and it is to a certain extent, it may also prevent animals from living in unsanitary conditions.

Many shelters have guidelines for adopting animals. Much of the time, owners are required to spay or neuter their animal as a safety precaution. The overpopulation of stray and abandoned animals is due much in part to the owners’ inability to fix their pet. They may also be required to vaccinate their new pets to prevent the spread of disease and illness.

If you are getting rid of a pet, make an effort to find a home for it outside of a shelter. While many shelter will take in abandoned animals, they are often short on space and resources. Take your animal to a shelter as a last resort. However, if you are looking for a new dog, adopting from a shelter is a great way to give an amazing dog a second chance at life.
