Find ways to contribute to your local dog shelter

If you are a dog person, than you probably care about the well-being of all dogs, not just your own. While it is easiest and most convenient to take care of your own dog, there are ways in which you can help other dogs in need. One of the best ways to reach out to dogs in your area is to become involved with your local animal shelters.

If you have extra time, consider volunteering at a nearby shelter. Many shelters are run almost exclusively by volunteers and most would be grateful for your assistance. While some jobs at the shelter may involve time with the animals, others may entail time behind the scenes or with the public. You may be asked to walk or play with the dogs one day. Another day you might clean out their cages or provide them with food and water. Some days, you will probably work on paperwork or at the front desk. Spending time helping out at a shelter is a great way to contribute to the needs of other dogs while meeting like-minded dog lovers.

Even if you do not have the time to physically spend at a shelter, there are other ways to contribute. Many shelters have a “wish list” of things they need for their animals. Because a lot of shelters run on donations, they may sometimes struggle to get everything they need for the building and the animals. Almost all shelters are more than happy to have old towels or blankets, food dishes, dog food, leashes and more. Contact a shelter near you to find out what you may be able to provide for their animals.

Shelter are almost always in need of monetary donations as well. They need to provide veterinary care to sick or injured animals, vaccinations, puppy care and more. If you are in the financial position to do so, consider making a donation to a shelter in your area. Many times, you will receive newsletters keeping you up to date on the progress and status of the shelter.

Never feel bad about how much or little you are able to give to your local shelter. Even stopping by with a single box of dog treats can make a homeless animal’s day much brighter.
