Choosing a Dog Walker
Most dogs naturally have a great deal of energy. They thrive on playtime, exercise, and interaction with other living things. Unfortunately, when they do not receive adequate amounts of mental and physical stimulation, they often develop health and behavior problems. Many dogs will become overweight or obese without regular exercise. Additionally, they will begin to get into trouble around the home, looking for ways to keep themselves busy when faced with a lack of other options. Even worse, the schedules of many dog owners do not always allow for a great deal of time with their dogs. Luckily, busy dog owners can always enlist the help of a dog walker to provide exercise for their dog when they themselves cannot.
Dog walkers can be hired to literally take your dog for a walk. However, many times you can recommend playtime as well. There is little need to hire a dog walker for everyday of the week. You can work out a schedule that is best for your dog, and best for you. Perhaps you work late one night a week; you can have your dog walker come that day to exercise your dog in your absence. But perhaps you worry about your dog getting enough exercise all week; you can hire a dog walker for each day of the week.
The most important thing when choosing a dog walker is trust. Remember that they are going to be handling your beloved pet, so make sure you hire someone who is responsible, kind, and trustworthy. Perhaps look to family or friends, especially if they are already familiar with your dog. Oftentimes, kids around your neighborhood will be more than happy to help with your dog. If you do not personally know anyone interested in walking your dog, talk to your veterinarian. He or she should be able to steer you in the direction of a professional dog walker, who has both experience and a great reputation.
Be sure to take time to introduce your dog to the new dog walker. It is best to go on the first couple of walks with the pair so that you can advise and assist through any challenges.
