Change your dog care habits to suit your senior dog
One of the obvious ways in which you can help your dog age comfortably is to change his diet. Many pet food companies have specialty blends, formulated with the needs of an older dog in mind. Often times these foods are lower in fat and calories while providing more fiber than ordinary dog food. Check with your veterinarian to see which option is appropriate for your dog. Additionally, take extra care to provide your dog with clean, fresh water. If your dog suffers from arthritis or another condition, your veterinarian may recommend a supplement to his regular diet.
Many times, older dogs will become sore and achy. It may be beneficial to provide your dog with a comfortable bed so that he does not have to lay on the cold, hard floor. Provide extra blankets or pillows to keep your dog comfortable and content. Limit the time your dog spends outdoors in extremely hot or cold weather. He will be more sensitive to the heat and cold, and will run a greater risk of falling ill. Also change your dog’s exercise routine to accommodate his newly sore and stiff body. Keep activities relaxing, not strenuous.
Always maintain regular veterinary care as your dog ages. When he is in old age, he will become more vulnerable. It is important to have a veterinarian’s advice and guidance when dealing with your dog’s changes.
Lastly, your dog may become less patient or more introverted. It is important to remain patient and understanding and to work with your dog through these changes. It may be difficult to see your dog change, but remember that his heart is the same. Inside his gray and stiff body, he is still your loving companion. Be sure to provide him with love and support all of the time.
