Breed Profile: The Chihuahua

The chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world. It is one of the most well-known lap dogs. Technically, the chihuahua is a member of the toy group of dogs. These dogs, like all other toy dogs, were bred specifically as companions to humans. This intentional breeding has left the chihuahua with many distinct personality traits.

The chihuahua is strictly a pet. He has never served as a working dog to people, unlike hunting dogs, watch dogs, service dogs, and more. His place in the world is right with his human counterpart. Because of this, chihuahuas might become very attached to their owners. Sometimes they even become defensive of their owners, barking excitedly when other people or animals come between themselves and their owners. For these reasons, the chihuahua is not good in a household with other animals, particularly other dogs. Additionally, he is typically not a good dog for a household with children.

The chihuahua was named after the Mexican state Chihuahua. Because of his Mexican heritage, the chihuahua was once the mascot for the Mexican fast food chain, Taco Bell. Due to his placement in the Taco Bell commercials as well as other areas of pop culture, the Chihuahua is one of the most well-known breeds of dogs in the world.

The chihuahua stands anywhere from six to fifteen inches tall. However, chihuahuas under ten inches tall are the  most common. In order to be considered a true chihuahua for confirmation classes, a chihuahua must weigh six pounds or less. Nevertheless, thechihuahua’s oftentimes in active and luxurious lifestyle often causes him to become overweight. There are two different types of chihuahua coats. Some of the dogs have long hair while others have short. Long haired chihuahuas are fluffy with a two layer coat while short haired chihuahuas are smoother in fur. The coat of a chihuahua may come in any color.

The chihuahua may not be the right dog for everyone, but chihuahua lovers are as loyal to the breed as the chihuahua dog is to his owner.
