Breed Profile: The Chesapeake Bay Retriever
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a breed of dog that originated in America, on the coast of the Chesapeake Bay as the name suggests. It is thought that the Chesapeake Bay Retriever’s ancestors had a great deal of Newfoundland dog in them. This dog is known for its easy-going demeanor, as well as its likeness to the popular Labrador Retriever, making it an excellent family dog, or canine companion for active individuals.
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a sporting dog, specifically a hunting dog. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever’s specialty is waterfowl. This breed of dog usually takes happily to the water, and has a physical body that lends it well to swimming. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has a water resistant coat that can spend a great deal of time in water before the water is able to soak through to the body. There is an oil on the Chesapeake Bay Retriever’s coat that gives it its waterproof quality so it is important to avoid over-bathing, or else you risk ruining the coat. However the oil also gives the breed a certain musky smell.
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is straw, brown, or chestnut in color with amber eyes. He stands 21 to 27 inches tall and weighs 55 to 70 pounds, making him a medium to large sized dog. As with many big dogs, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever needs plenty of exercise and activity. However he is lovable, intelligent, and social. His happy personality makes him a much loved dog, particularly with those who enjoy outdoor and water activities.
As a downside, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever can be a bit stubborn at times, and his large size makes him a very strong dog. However with proper training, he is a quick learner and usually eager to please.
