Beach Safety for Dogs
A dog friendly beach can be a wonderful place to take your dog. The ocean, sunshine, sand, and more all provide plenty of fun and enjoyment. However, the ocean is also a very dangerous place, so be sure to keep your dog safe while enjoying the beach.
When at the beach, remember that dogs can get sunburn. It never hurts to put some sunscreen on your dog’s nose and face. Be sure to use a child’s sunscreen, meant for sensitive skin, and be careful to avoid getting the sunscreen in your dog’s eyes. As you apply the sunscreen, be sure to remove any flea collars. The flea collars are useless once they get wet, and additionally, a wet flea collar can irritate your dog.
Keep an eye on the beach conditions. If there are warnings for people, remember that the same warnings apply to dogs. Jelly fish, sharks, and more can all harm your dog. Do not let your dog in polluted water, or water with a great deal of broken glass or shells. These items can seriously injure your dog. Likewise, do not let your dog eat anything at the beach. There may be pollutants or diseased organisms, so keep a close eye on your dog.
Remember to gage the amount of time you spend at the beach. The hot afternoon sun can be deadly, and the ocean provides plenty of water, but it is all saltwater. Bring an umbrella to provide your dog with shade. And also bring plenty of fresh water, as well as a water bowl, so that your dog can stay refreshed throughout the day. Do not let your dog get overheated, and remember that your dog might need to leave if the weather is too hot.
Additionally, do not let your dog go out into very deep water, or particularly rough waters. Remember that a safe day at the beach is always a fun day at the beach so take all necessary precautions.
