Alter your dog’s exercise routine to keep him mentally stimulated
Many people think of their dogs as simple minded. They might think that their dog is mentally and physically inferior to themselves and thus requires less to feel happy and content. While dogs do indeed differ from their human companions, most have an intense need for both mental and physical stimulation. Do your dog and yourself a favor by making an effort to maintain an air of freshness in your lives by switching up your regular activities.
One of the easiest ways to switch up your exercise routine is to change the location. Dogs have sharp senses and will appreciate new sites, smells, sounds and textures. If you usually take your dog for a walk down your street, find a park as an alternative. If you usually walk through the woods with your dog, a more crowded park might be just the thing to add some change.
Sometimes changing your location just is not convenient. Instead, switch the pace and direction of your walk. Walk and jog in intervals to keep your dog’s attention and burn energy. If you are accustomed to walking one way around the block, try going the other way a few times a week, or walk on the other side of the street. Your dog will love the change of pace and will probably be more energetic.
If you have friends or family with friendly dogs, invite them to join you for your walks. Your dog will love the canine company, and you will probably enjoy having some human company once in a while. Of course, be sure your dog is kind to other dogs, and that his potential buddy is as well, before adding another dog to his exercise routine.
Sometimes even enrolling yourself and your dog in a training course can provide the necessary stimulation and excitement. Be sure to choose a class level that is appropriate to your dog’s age, level of fitness and amount of current training for the best results. The physical activity, mental engagement and time with you will strengthen your relationship with your dog and meet his needs.
With a little thought and planning, it is easy to provide the stimulation that your dog needs. With adequate adventure, your dog will be happier, healthier and better behaved.
