Alpha Dogs
While dogs are thought to be man’s best friend, some canines live their lives in constant competition with their owners and other people. These struggles are most often a fight for authority, or the position of alpha dog in a household. While many times, the dog may be gentle enough to cause nothing more than headache and frustration; other dogs may act out aggressively, hurting anyone who tries to challenge their position. These actions stem from a dog’s natural instinct to behave as they would in the wild, as wolves still behave to this day.
When dealing with any dog, it is important to remember that within their ancestry are wild animals. Even the most domesticated of breeds have a wild animal somewhere in their bloodline. Because of this factor, all dogs harbor a level of natural instinct. They long to be part of a pack and often strive to become the leader of that pack, known as the alpha dog.
In any given pack, the alpha dog is responsible for the overall wellbeing of his pack. He organizes his group, leading them out of harms way, into shelter and to food sources. Dogs will sometimes battle for this position and though they have been domesticated, some pets will also try to fight for role of alpha. It is important for dog owners to make themselves known as the alpha, both to reassure their dog and to maintain a healthy relationship.
It is easiest to assert your role as alpha when your dog is a small puppy. At that point in their life, they are learning about the world and their role within it. Take care of your puppy, offer guidance and let them know they are safe when they follow your lead. Most dogs will readily accept their role as companion and your role as master. Remember that most behavior problems arise from a lack of authority in your dog’s life. While you never want your dog to be afraid of you, you do want to ensure his confidence in your abilities to lead him through life.
